Human Rights Day

On December 10th, 1948 the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It declared that the "recognition of the inherent dignity and of the inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world." It could arguably be called the birth of the modern human rights movement.

The Amnesty International Write-a-thon, first organized by Amnesty members in Poland, emphasizes the enduring importance of the declaration and the human rights movement by drawing the world's attention to human rights abuses that continue to this day. The Write-a-thon is a truly global event – participants from over 30 countries writing letters, read aloud in many languages, but all containing the same message of freedom, justice and peace.
