Global Write-a-thon
December 8-10, 2006

Join us - thousands of Amnesty International (AI) members, groups and friends around the world - by participating in AI's annual Global Write-a-thon.
This international solidarity event was initiated by activists at AI-Poland on December 10, 2002 in commemoration of International Human Rights Day. Last year, AI activists from over thirty countries wrote letters during the Global Write-a-thon. The letters and postcards they wrote effected powerful change in the lives of individuals, helped stop violence against women and contributed to the release of Prisoners of Conscience around the world.

“The candle burns not for us, but for all those whom we failed to rescue from prison, who were shot on the way to prison, who were tortured, who were kidnapped, who 'disappeared'. That is what the candle is for.”
-- Peter Benenson, the founder of Amnesty International, who died February 25, 2005. |
This global event is held every year in December, to celebrate December 10, the day the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year's Write-a-thon is dedicated to the memory of Peter Benenson.
